A review of near-limit opposed fire spread

نویسندگان

چکیده

Creeping fire spread under opposed airflow is a classic fundamental research problem involving heat transfer, fluid dynamics, chemical kinetics, and strongly dependent on environmental factors. Persistent over the last 50 years has established solid framework for different fire-spread processes, but new phenomena recent developments continue to challenge our current understanding inspire future areas. In this review, we revisit of limited excessive oxygen supply. Various near-limit phenomena, as recently observed in flaming, smoldering, glowing various environment fuel configurations, are reviewed detail. Particularly, aspects apparent importance, such transition heterogenous chemistry, highlighted, valuable problems suggested.

A convection model for fire spread simulation

We present a convection model which can be coupled with fire propagation models in order to take into account the wind and the slope which are two of the most relevant factors affecting surface fire spread. An asymptotic analysis gives a three dimensional convective model governed by a two–dimensional equation.

Inverse spread limit of a nonnegative matrix

For a given nonnegative n × n matrix A consider the following quantity s(A) := mini,j(A)ij maxi,j(A)ij , m = 1, 2, . . . as long as the denominator is positive. It is simply the ratio between the smallest and the largest entries of Am. We call s(Am) the inverse spread of Am which is interpreted as a measure of the maximum variation among the entries of Am in the multiplicative and reciprocal se...

Microgravity opposed-flow flame spread in polyvinyl chloride tubes

The effects of gravity on opposed-flow flame spread in a confined geometry were investigated experimentally in the 2.2-s drop tower at the NASA Glenn Research Center. Pure oxygen flowed through samples of 0.64-cminner-diameter polyvinyl chloride (PVC) tubing held either horizontally or vertically in a combustion chamber filled with nitrogen. The sample was ignited in normal gravity with a hot w...

Near-limit laminar burning velocities of microgravity premixed hydrogen flames with chemically-passive fire suppressants

Effects of chemically-passive fire suppressants on laminar premixed hydrogen flames were investigated by combined use of microgravity experiments and computations. The experiments used a short-drop freefall laboratory facility that provides at least 450 ms of 10 2 g. Near-limit laminar burning velocities were measured for outwardly propagating spherical stoichiometric hydrogen-air flames with v...
